About Hampton, Virginia

Learn About This Location

Hampton's history dates to the city's Old Point Comfort, the site of Fort Monroe for nearly four centuries, which was established in 1607. Since its consolidation in 1952, Hampton includes the former Elizabeth City County and town of Phoebus. After the close of the Civil War, Hampton University was established on the Hampton River, providing education for many newly-freed slaves as well as indigenous Native Americans. In the past century Hampton became home for Langley Air Force Base, NASA Langley Research Center, and the Virginia Air and Space Center. Hampton contains miles and miles of waterfront and beaches.

The city features a large selection of industrial, retail and residential areas, alongside the city's historical sites. The new Peninsula Town Center development opened its doors in 2010 on the site of the former Coliseum Mall. Adjacent to the Hampton Coliseum, this new urbanistt development features retail stores, housing and other attractions.
