Learn About This Location
Herndon was named after Commander William Lewis Herndon, a naval explorer who authored Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon. In the 1870s, Northern soldiers settled in the area, largely sue to Herdon's moderate climate and low real estate prices.
At first a rural surrounding area of Washington, D.C., the town developed into a center for dairy farming and vacationers. When the railroad was turned into a hike-and-bike trail, Herndon took advantage of its unique history and small-town feel by converting its train station into a museum and visitor center.
