Although Augusta isn't the smallest state capital in the US, it sure feels like it. Overlooking a stretch of the Kennebec River, boaters still cast for fish with the glittering dome of the State House just above the treeline. Although there isn’t much reason to venture, there are a few historic sites worth visiting (a good history museum and a wooden fort) and some antique shops and cafés in nearby Hallowell.
