Cary is the seventh largest municipal area in North Carolina, straddling Wake and Chatham countie. Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill constitute the three primary cities of the Research Triangle region even though today Cary is the 3rd largest municipality. The regional nickname of "The Triangle" originated after the creation of the Research Triangle Park in 1959, primarily located in Durham County. RTP is roughly halfway between Raleigh and Chapel Hill, and three major research universities of NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.
