Amog the cities that make up the Hampton Roads, Chesapeake was established in 1963 by a vote approving the consolidation of South Norfolk with the remainder of former Norfolk County, which dates to 1691. Chesapeake is the second-largest city in terms of area in Virginia.

Chesapeake is a diverse city with a few urban areas; but it also contains protected farmland, forests, and wildlife refuges. It has miles of waterfront industrial, commercial and residential development. Chesapeake was ranked as the 21st best city in the US by Businessweek in 2011.
