Named the most desirable place in the country to live by U.S. News, Colorado Springs has a lot to offer both residents and guests. Originally, this city at more than a mile in elevation was a hub for the Pike's Peak Gold Rush; it's grown to the 42nd largest city in the U.S. with a population of more than 470,000.

Inventor Nikola Tesla had a laboratory here, and the city has long had both a strong military presence and an impressive collection of athletes and sports organizations based in Colorado Springs. High-tech continues to be a significant employer, and the city is home to offices for Hewlett-Packard, Agilent, Verizon Business, Intel and more.

The Community of Colorado Springs

Eleven main neighborhoods comprise Colorado Springs. Much of the residential area is to the northwest, while most of the military facilities are in the southwest part of the city. Briargate is in the north and has most of the shopping and dining, as well as business centers and offices.

What to Do in Colorado Springs

America's "Mountain Zoo" -- the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo -- lets you see more than 750 animals in well-replicated environments. This is one of the few zoos left in the U.S. where you can still feed the giraffes, and these gorgeous animals are housed so they'll see you at eye level. Plus, views of the surrounding Rockies are great.

Colorado Springs is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, and even non-athletes can get a glimpse of training life with a guided tour. More than 500 athletes live here at any time and you may see some of them practicing as you move around the facility.

All the WWII planes housed at the National Museum of World War II Aviation actually fly, but most are grounded and ready for you to tour. In addition to the aircraft, you can see the restoration center and talk to knowledgeable guides and historians. Simulators let those of any age see what it's really like to fly.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods is a natural landmark formed below Pikes Peak where hiking, trail running, mountain biking, horseback riding and rock climbing are popular recreational pastimes. You don't need to be active to enjoy these ancient rock formations and area wildlife, or get up close and personal via a Jeep tour. The Visitor & Nature Center is a great starting point with exhibits and a movie that gives you a taste of a geo-trekking experience.
