About Arvada

Arvada, CO, is a suburb of Denver with a history of its own. In the mid-1800s, gold was found nearby, but most prospectors quickly grew tired and struck out for the more lucrative panning in California. Those miners who remained discovered that the soil was the real treasure, turning the valley into an agricultural area that was once known as the "Celery Capital of the World." Today's Arvada is known for its historic Olde Town, recreational opportunities in more than 90 local parks and the annual Harvest Festival.

The Community of Arvada

Most of Arvada is residential, with homeowners commuting to Denver for work. The top neighborhoods are located to the west of the city, with the downtown in the southeast. Most stores and attractions are located on Wadsworth Boulevard, 52nd and 64th Avenues, Ralston Road and Kipling Street.

What to Do in Arvada

The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities includes a huge outdoor amphitheater, indoor theatre, art galleries, children's sculpture park and spaces for classes and camps. The Arvada History Museum (admission: free) is also part of this arts complex.

With hands-on exhibits and plenty of activities for all ages, the Majestic View Nature Center invites you to learn more about the ecology and wildlife of the local area. Park trails perfect for walking or biking are open even when the center's closed and allow you to access a lake and wetlands areas. A new playground is great for the little ones and picnic areas are plentiful.

Author Clive Cussler expanded his love for antique automobiles into a full museum, the Cussler Museum, which currently houses more than 100 cars. Many of the cars were featured in Cussler's best-selling books and are displayed with interesting historical information. Cars rotate from time to time so there's often something new to see.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Arvada

Olde Town Arvada with its many unique shops, small eateries and bakeries, and breweries seems designed for wandering and exploring -- and, of course, eating and drinking. Historic buildings, occasional live entertainment and other events attract locals and tourists alike.

Dining in Arvada

Whether or not you're a fan of George W. Bush, you may want to visit his favorite Denver-area Chinese restaurant: the award-winning Heaven Dragon. With many "Americanized" Chinese dishes like Peking Duck, Lo Mein and Kung Pao Chicken on the menu, the restaurant's food is delicious, portions large and prices reasonable.

Sit down to a craft cocktail and traditional pub food like pulled pork sliders and burgers at the Arvada Tavern. Two more excellent options: the ribeye with a tarragon bearnaise sauce or the tavern mac-n-cheese with your choice of add-ins like mushrooms or trout.
