Dublin has been a global city since the 800s AD and is the capital city of Ireland. Dublin is a contemporary and historical centre for Irish education, arts, and culture, administration and industry. While visitors might have to do some digging to see evidence of its Viking past, Dublin's rich history is apparent all around, from its medieval castle and cathedrals to the magnificence of the 18th century, when it was the most beautiful Georgian city in the Empire and its lavish public and private buildings reflected the status of its most affluent residents. Dublin is a relatively small and accessible city, small enough and safe enough to get around on foot, while the Luas tram system and the suburban rail system, the DART, provide excellent transport throughout the city.
