Learn About This Location

Fort Wayne is a city located in northeastern Indiana, 18 miles west of the Ohio border and 50 miles south of the Michigan border. Fort Wayne is the 77th largest city in the United States and the second largest in Indiana, after Indianapolis.

Under the supervision of Revolutionary War statesman Anthony Wayne, the US Army built Fort Wayne in 1794. The settlement developed as a pioneer trading post. The village was plotted in 1823 and experienced rapid growth after the Wabash and Erie Canal were completed and with the proliferation of the railroad. Fort Wayne's economy today is based upon distribution, transport and logistics, healthcare, professional services, leisure and hospitality, and financial services. The city is a center for the defense industry as well.
