Fremont was established in 1956 from the merger of five smaller communities: Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs; and named after explorer John Charles Frémont (the Great Pathfinder.) Seated in the southeast side of the San Francisco Bay Area, Fremont has a population of around 220,000, making it the 4th most populous city and the largest suburb in the Bay Area.
