Learn About This Location

Hopewell is a charming riverside town located at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers. It was founded as an optimal site to overlook both rivers. The oldest part of the town, City Point, was established in 1613, and was first known as "Bermuda City," which became Charles City, then Charles City Point, and later just City Point. (Bermuda, the Atlantic archipelago, was mapped as a part of Virginia at the time.)

Hopewell has had a hard time with a loss of jobs due to industrial plant closures and the ensuing environmental clean-up cost. The city's residential areas are predominantly small homes with many offered as rentals. Some of these were built to house plant workers during WWI.
