The new millennium was a major turning point for the 'Sleeping Beauty' city. The mayor, former Prime Minister Alain Juppé, roused Bordeaux by making its bouldevards more walkable, restoring its traditional architecture and initiating a state-of-the-art public transport system. In mid-2007 half of the entire city was Unesco-listed as the largest urban World Heritage Site. With its high-spirited student population, La Belle Bordeaux now hardly seems to sleep at all.
