Learn About This Location

Kokomo is a city in Howard County, Indiana, and the 13th-largest city in the state. Kokomo's population was 45,468 as of 2010.

Named for the Native American Indian Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo or "Chief Kokomo", before the Civil War, it was connected with Indianapolis and later, Eastern cities by railroad, which gave it sustained growth. Further development came after the discovery of natural gas reserves, which resulted in a boom in the mid-1880s. Among the businesses this attracted was the infant automobile industry. A significant number of engineering innovations were developed in Kokomo, particularly in the automotive sector, and as a result, Kokomo earned the title "City of Firsts."
