Newport News lies within the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, on the northern shore of the James River. The area now called Newport News was once a part of Warwick County, one of the original shires of Virginia formed by the House of Burgesses.
It has many residents employed at the Newport News Shipbuilding, the joint Air Force-Army installation at Joint Base Langley–Eustis, and its economy is very much linked to the military. The location along the James Riveexpedites a large maritime industry.
