About Lynchburg, Virginia

Learn About This Location

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lynchburg is known as the "City of Seven Hills". It was the only major Virginian city that was not captured before the end of the Civil War.

First settled in 1757, Lynchburg wasfounded by John Lynch, who started a ferry service across the James River to carry traffic to and from New London. He was also responsible for Lynchburg's first bridge, which later replaced the ferry. The "City of Seven Hills" quickly expanded along the hills surrounding Lynch's Ferry. Thomas Jefferson famously remarked "Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be useful to the town of Lynchburg. I consider it as the most interesting spot in the state."
