About Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Learn About This Location

Bethlehem, PA, (also known as Christmas City, USA) was founded over 250 years ago when members of the Moravian Church near the Monocacy Creek and Lehigh River. Bethlehem was named on Christmas Eve, 1741 in a stable while the small group of residents were singing “Not Jerusalem, Lowly Bethlehem.”

In 1741, the first Moravians cut down white oak trees and began building the community of Bethlehem on the 500 acre tract of land. Crafts, trades, and industries were located along the Monocacy Creek and Lehigh River and their institutions along what is now Church Street.

Bethlehem has six National Register Historic Districts and a very active arts and culture scene. It is one of Money Magazine's 100 Best Places to live in the US.
