Cartersville is in south-central Bartow County, 40 miles northwest of Atlanta and 75 miles southeast of Chattanooga. The Etowah River flows through the area south of the downtown, leading west to Rome, where it forms the Coosa River. The city limits spread eastward, upriver, as far as Allatoona Dam, which forms Lake Allatoona, a large reservoir. Red Top Mountain State Park lies on a peninsula in the lake, just outside the city.
