About El Segundo

Learn About This Location

About El Segundo, CA

When the Standard Oil Company established its second oil refinery on the California coast near Los Angeles in 1911, company officials dubbed the area "El Segundo" or "the second." More than 100 years later, El Segundo retains a small town feel despite being home to many airline and aerospace firms as well as Chevron, the modern-day evolution of Standard Oil. A nice beach, highly-ranked schools and a parks department that helped spawn the hit show "Parks and Recreation" give El Segundo a comfortable, middle-class flavor.

The Community of El Segundo

To the north, El Segundo is bordered by Los Angeles International Airport, which is why it attracts the headquarters of both domestic and international airlines. The southern edge of the city leads to Manhattan Beach, with the Pacific Ocean to the west; most of El Segundo's residents live in this southwest area. Many of the commercial buildings in the city are located to the east. Despite being right at sea level, the city is listed in the Guinness World Records book as having the most roads with a hill or grade in the U.S.

What to Do in El Segundo

Vintage movies, including silent films, are accompanied by live music at the Old Town Music Hall that's operated in the city since the 1960s. Its wind-powered Wurlitzer pipe organ is often used for the musical accompaniment as well as in frequent concerts held at the facility. Movies are usually shown a few times over the course of a weekend.

Ever seen the show "Baggage Battles" on the Travel Channel or "Storage Wars" on A&E? A frequently featured store, Studio Antiques, is in the heart of El Segundo and crams a variety of old and unusual relics into a small space. For 27 years, owners Laurence and Sally Martin have sought special treasures to buy, sell and trade. Make an offer if you see something you can't live without.

California wouldn't have the identity it does without the automobile, and you can learn and understand more about this history at the Automobile Driving Museum. Sundays (when the weather cooperates) are dedicated to giving rides in some of the museum's vintage cars. Even when the cars aren't moving, you can sit in them and imagine you feel the wind in your hair.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in El Segundo

Browse through the open air mall at The Point for a variety of small shops and unique eateries. Dining in El Segundo

Blending Southwest and Mexican cuisine, Sausal has a varied menu with options like duck enchiladas with black mole sauce and achiote-marinated arroz con pollo as well as other wood-fired and slow-roasted meats. Unique cocktails and house-made sangrias pair up with your chosen dish. Don't pass up a Spanish sticky date cake or seasonal flan for dessert.

El Segundo Brewing offers one of the area's best selection of craft brews with a huge variety to choose from. Behind the taproom, you can grab a just-right pub burger with loaded fries to accompany your mug of beer.
