About Redwood City

In the heart of Silicon Valley, nestled between San Francisco to the north and San Jose to the southeast, Redwood City is home to several high-tech firms as well as the only deepwater port in the south Bay area. Over the past 20 years, city officials have emphasized revitalization of the downtown area, remodeling the county courthouse as a centerpiece of the city and adding retail, dining and entertainment to Redwood City.

The Community of Redwood City

The iconic Highway 101 runs right through Redwood City. Most of Redwood City's neighborhoods, including downtown, are southwest of 101; Redwood Shores and Bair Island are the main areas north of the highway. The residential areas of Mt. Carmel, Edgewood and Roosevelt sit away from the Bay, as does Woodside Plaza and the area of Farm Hills that reflects the city's former agricultural beginnings.

What to Do in Redwood City

Small but comprehensive, the San Mateo County History Museum features exhibits that explain immigration to the area, the south Bay's shipbuilding background and even the famous sports personalities that come from San Mateo County. Housed in the former county courthouse downtown, the building alone is worth a visit. Some of the exhibits, like one devoted to surfing, are interactive and appeal to all ages. Come on the first Friday of each month for free admission.

Looking for a good place to hike in Redwood City? The Edgewood Park Natural Preserve holds miles of hiking trails that culminate in lovely views of San Francisco. Spring visitors will enjoy the fields of wildflowers that the preserve is known for.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Redwood City

The Hetch Hetchy reservoir system that brings fresh, clean drinking water from Yosemite to the Bay Area ends at the Pulgas Water Temple in Redwood City. A monument commemorates the 24-year project to bring water nearly 160 miles across the state and the engineering required to accomplish the feat. The grounds around the Pulgas Water Temple are ideal for picnicking, letting the kids run around or just relaxing.

Dining in Redwood City

California cuisine can encompass many styles, and Angelica's in downtown Redwood City blends more traditional California dishes with Asian and European influences. Pasta and seafood highlight the dinner menu, but folks in the know tend to swarm Angelica's for its amazing brunch offerings. Live music is often on tap.

Also located in downtown, Quinto Sol features dishes from the city of Puebla in Central Mexico as well as amazing hand-shaken margaritas. With large portions, excellent seafood and inexpensive Happy Hour options, Quinto Sol is perfect for dinner after an event downtown.
