Few metropolitan cities are able to retain the very heart and soul of its culture the way China’s Xi’an has. It was once upon a time known as the city of Chang’an, which translates to ‘eternal peace’ in Chinese. It is the capital of Shaanxi province in the center of the Guanzhong Plain and is the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China.
The city also marks the eastern end of the Silk Road, an ancient network of trade routes that connected the West and East, as it was once the chosen home of numerous ancient dynasties. Among many of Xi’an’s cultural hotspots, quite possibly the most iconic is the Bingmayong (Terracotta Army), which is a collection of over eight thousand terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.
Most of Xi’an is easily accessible on foot, with many of its commercial, residential, educations zones in the city, especially in the shopping and entertainment districts around the Bell Tower, connected through underpasses and overpasses that have been built for the safety and convenience of pedestrians.
Apart from that, the rental of public bicycles is easily available, offering locals and visitors alike accessible transportation in and around the city. Xi'an was once the end point of the Silk Road and a mixing area of various cultures, in addition to the home of emperors, courtesans, poets, merchants and warriors. Yet visitors can feel disappointed by the modern-day version. But even though its glory days ended in the early 900s AD, many elements of ancient Xi'an are still alive and well. The ancient city walls remain intact, vendors of all types still throng the narrow streets of the Muslim Quarter, and there are enough places of interest to keep even the most avid history-buff entertained. While it's no longer China’s political capital, it’s realized the value of its hallowed history. Recently, the city has been campaigning to add the Silk Road to the Unesco World Heritage List.
