About Broomfield, Colorado

Learn About This Location

Broomfield, CO

Taking its name from the broomcorn, a tall plant used for making brooms, Broomfield has the distinction of being both a city and a county. As the municipality grew starting in the 1960s, it spread into parts of four counties. The challenges of dealing with four different county courts, school districts and jurisdictions led city leaders to create a new county in 2001 -- Colorado's smallest and newest county.

With 63 parks and more than 290 miles of walking and biking trails, Broomfield places a value on green space. Its location north of Denver and close to Boulder make it a popular choice for businesses to locate their headquarters. Level 3 Communications and Oracle are the city's largest employers.

The Community of Broomfield

Most of Broomfield is situated between I-25 and Highway 36, and its Main Street runs through the west center of the city. While Broomfield has a small downtown area, a lot of the community is residential. Most of the shopping is located in the southeast part of the city, with businesses including Level 3 Communication's headquarters to the west.

What to Do in Broomfield

If shopping, strolling or people watching are of interest, FlatIron Crossing is a two-level mall with more than 200 stores and restaurants. There's also a state-of-the-art movie complex where the latest blockbusters can entertain you for a couple hours. While many malls around the country are declining in popularity, FlatIron Crossing is still the place to shop in the northern Denver metro area.

Take in a show at the 1stBank Center, a mid-size venue that hosts live music, plays, family amusements and sporting events. Great seats, good sound and easy parking make this the place for entertainment in Broomfield.

The Bay Outdoor Water Park has three slides -- two full body and one for inner tubes -- as well as a leisure pool and a child's water play area. Open only in the summer months, the water park allows picnic food to be brought in, or you can choose from the concession stand's offerings.

The building is the actual old station, built by Colorado & Southern Railway in 1909 as the depot and living area for the station agents. A speaker series and guided tours can help you learn more about the history of the railroad in this part of Colorado.
