About Tacoma, Washington

Learn About This Location

Tacoma is a mid-sized urban port city in Washington, 32 miles southwest of Seattle. The population was 198,397 at the time of the 2010 census. Tacoma serves as the center of business for the South Sound region.

Tacoma adopted its name after Mount Rainier, originally called Tahoma. It's known as the "City of Destiny" because it was chosen to be the western terminal for the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s, in part due to its deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By linking the bay with the railroad, Tacoma's motto was "When rails meet sails."
