About San Bruno, California

Just 12 short miles from downtown San Francisco, San Bruno, Calif., provides an urban feel outside the big city. Despite being founded by Spanish missionaries, who made this a livestock area for the San Francisco de Asis mission, the name comes from medieval monk St. Bruno of Cologne. The city began to take shape following the 1906 earthquake and fire that rocked the Bay Area. Today, with excellent restaurants, beautiful parks and good schools, many commuters make their homes in San Bruno.

The Community of San Bruno

Real estate in San Bruno carries a high price tag due to its desirable location. More people than average rely on public transportation to commute, and both Caltrain and BART serve the city. Eight sections of the city are all relatively safe and desirable for living, with the wealthiest areas sitting off Skyline Blvd in the northwest and the less expensive spots to the northeast of the city, closest to San Francisco International Airport.

What to Do in San Bruno

One of the country's most reverent places, Golden Gate National Cemetery, lies inside the city limits of San Bruno. Like the more famed Arlington near Washington, D.C., this national cemetery, U.S. soldiers are laid to rest here. You can pay your respects and learn more about the nation's history via monuments to wars past as you walk quietly around the grounds.

San Bruno Point Park is a pleasant place to reflect and enjoy nature. You can take an easy walk via a paved path down to the water and check out Whistling Tower, a metal structure that plays interesting music when the wind blows -- which is often. Watch planes take off from the San Francisco airport if you have more time.

Looking for a place to get a little shopping done? The Shops at Tanforan has many of the popular stores you know and love, plus some small gems, a movie theater and a food court.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in San Bruno

Get your fill of natural areas in the biggest urban open space in the U.S.: San Bruno Mountain. With 3,300 acres of undeveloped land, the mountain has several hiking trails, including the Summit Loop Trail that leads to lovely views of San Francisco. Along the way, look for wildflowers and golden eagles. Want the views without the hike? Drive up to the top and pay $6 to park.

Dining in San Bruno

Frequently topping lists of best Asian restaurants in the Bay Area, Patio Filipino is not to be missed while you're in San Bruno. Classic Filipino dishes like Crispy Pata and Kare-Kare are served with a Spanish twist. Vegetarians might choose the delicious Eggplant Salad.

The West Coast Cafe boasts a "relaxed Tuscan atmosphere" and serves up some of Italy's best in this unassuming location along San Mateo Avenue in San Bruno. Start with Bruschetta or a Calamari appetizer, fill up with a classic pasta dish like Fettuccine Alfredo or Linguine Tutto Mare and finish your meal with Creme Brulee.
