Named after the great oak trees that once lined the streets, Oakland is San Francisco's version of Brooklyn. To some degreeless expensive than San Fran, it’s where people have fled to escape astronomical housing costs. Ethnically very diverse, Oakland has a strong African American community history of labor unions. Urban farmers raise chickens in their yards or occupy start community gardens in abandoned lots, and self-satisfied residents thumb their noses at San Francisco’s fog while enjoying a sunnier climate.
