Mesa, AZ

Located east of Phoenix, the city of Mesa is the third largest in Arizona and has been some sort of city for more than 2,000 years. The aerospace industry began to grow here in the 1950s and '60s; today a Boeing plant still is the third-largest employer in the area. There's also a considerable Mormon influence and one of the largest temples in the Southwest situated in Mesa.

The Community of Mesa

Mesa is a long, narrow city that's generally divided into two halves: East and West Mesa. Center Street runs north to south with addresses to its east and west designated as such, respectively. The center of the city houses the downtown area with historic homes and arts and cultural venues.

Falcon Field and Williams Field opened near Mesa in the 1940s, and since that time, the city has been a hub for all things Air Force. Tour vintage WWII planes and even get a ride if you desire. Open most days; adult admission is $15.

The Arizona Museum of Natural History lets you spend an afternoon in the company of dinosaurs by learning about paleontology in the state. Or, observe findings from archeologists about the ancient peoples that lived in the desert. Open Tuesday through Sunday; admission is $7 for children and $12 for adults.

Ten major league baseball teams hold spring training near Mesa, and if you're here in spring, you can attend a preseason game at the recently renovated Hohokam Stadium where the Oakland A’s train. Alternatively, visit in fall for a Cactus League match-up.
