The Community of Scottsdale

You'll find four main areas in Scottsdale. South Scottsdale is home to most working-class families, while Old Town is the historical center and home to most of the popular dining and nightlife hotspots. Central Scottsdale, known as the "Shea Corridor," has some of the more well-to-do homes that were built during Scottsdale's first big boom period in the post-WWII years. North Scottsdale, the newest section of the city, is still in development and is home to the Scottsdale Airpark and most of the business growth in the area.

What to Do in Scottsdale

Old Town Scottsdale is home to arts, entertainment, dining and shopping -- it's the hub of the city for tourists and locals alike. Stroll through the area to assess the shops and pick up some of the undeniable western flavor in the form of unique jewelry, leather goods and souvenirs.

At the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, you can wander hiking trails to see the true beauty of the desert. With more than 30,000 acres, the preserve is also lauded for its mountain biking, horseback riding and rock climbing opportunities. Guided walks are frequently scheduled if you'd prefer not to go out on your own.

Despite the warm summer weather, there's a lot to do outside all year round in Scottsdale. Sports fans can visit the Penske Racing Museum and its several cars on display, get in a round of golf on one of the area's 200 layouts or attend a ball game at the Salt River Fields where both the Diamondbacks and the Rockies schedule spring training.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Scottsdale

Scottsdale's Museum of the West is located in a modern building in the arts district of downtown, and it's worth a stop. Both history and art exhibits pack the floors of this fun museum where there's something for just about everyone.

Dining in Scottsdale

Steakhouses are popular throughout the area, and Dominick's is one of the best. Huge portions and high-quality meat make this stop ideal for a special night out. An extensive wine and cocktail list get your evening started -- or finished -- right. Try to get a table on the top level, where a rooftop pool provides a lovely atmosphere.

For something a bit more low-key, try Craft 64 with multiple craft beers on tap and amazing wood-fired pizza selections.
