Raynham was originally settled in 1639 as a part of Taunton, and founded by Elizabeth Pole, the first woman in the US to found. Several years later, bog iron was found along the Two Mile  River, and the Taunton Iron Works was established, whcih was in operation from 1656 to 1876. The success of the Taunton Iron Works led to the establishment of other iron works within the colonies.
