About Richmond, Virginia

Learn About This Location

Richmond has been the capital Virginia since 1780, and is an old-fashioned Southern city that's grounded in tradition. It's an undeniably lovely town, full of red-brick rowhouses, a gushing river and verdant parks.

The site was an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and settled for a time by English colonists from Jamestown. The present-day city was founded in 1737, and became the capital of the Colony in 1780. During the Revolutionary War, several notable events occurred there, including Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the Civil War, Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy.
