Founded in 1521, San Juan is the second-oldest European settlement in the Americas. Sat on a tiny islet that guards the entrance to the city's harbor, San Juan was inaugurated nearly a century before the Mayflower arrived in Massachusetts, and is now a historic treasure that combines historical authenticity with modern energy.
Beyond its 15ft-thick walls, the capital is far more than a collection of colonial remnants – it also offers ever-changing neighborhoods like Santurce, which has a raw energy fueled by galleries, outstanding restaurants and lively bar scene. And then there's the beaches. You can be out in the azure waters an hour after your flight lands.
