About San Diego, CA

There's much to love about San Diego, the eighth largest city in the U.S. With its ideal weather, funky neighborhoods and attractions like SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, the city entertains millions of visitors each year. With a strong military presence -- the U.S. Navy is the area's largest employer -- and a large manufacturing and biotechnology base, San Diego is also a commercial hub.

The Community of San Diego

More than 52 individual areas or neighborhoods comprise San Diego, each with a different flavor. The downtown area, which also includes the famed Gaslamp Quarter with its shopping and restaurants, is located right on San Diego Bay, while Balboa Park sits to the northeast. Greater Golden Hill is just outside downtown and is a key spot for arts and craft breweries. The business center, called the Golden Triangle, is to the south, along with the beach communities of La Jolla, Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach.

What to Do in San Diego

You won't want to skip a trip to Balboa Park, which not only features a lot of lovely green space and walking trails, but also houses 16 museums including the San Diego Museum of Art, botanical gardens, performing arts venues and the famous San Diego Zoo with more than 3,500 animals. The park is so vast that shuttles are available to take you from the parking areas to attractions and a daily schedule is publicized so you can see everything that's going on.

For a less developed outdoor experience, head to Torrey Pine State Natural Reserve. Here, 1,500 acres of coastal land inside the city limits were set aside for conservation. While you can walk the paths and enjoy nature here, the primary objective is as a home for plants and animals. Paragliders frequent the cliffs here and they can be fun -- if a bit nerve-wracking -- to watch.

The USS Midway Museum is an interactive experience aboard an aircraft carrier located along the Embarcadero. A free audio tour helps you explore the history of the U.S. Navy as well as the ship itself. Veterans stand by to answer questions and give you their unique perspectives.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in San Diego

The Cabrillo National Monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first Spanish explorer to set foot in this part of California. On the grounds, you can explore the old Point Loma Lighthouse, investigate tidepools at low tide or learn more about Cabrillo and his explorations.

Dining in San Diego

It's hard to narrow down one or two of San Diego's best restaurants amid all the options, but Ambrogio15 regularly is called out as a top dining spot in the city. High-end Milano-style pizzas dominate the menu, but the unique dough is worth coming. Located in the heart of Little Italy, the restaurant also boasts an excellent wine list.

The Lion's Share is a unique bar in the Gaslight District that serves enjoyable craft cocktails and special wild game dishes like camel tacos and bison bolognese. The eclectic decor makes the experience even more enjoyable.
