Learn About This Location
West Dundee lies within Kane County, Illinois, and had a population of 7,258 as of the 2010 US Census. It's located across the Fox River from East Dundee and Carpentersville.
A tavern and a store were established in 1835 that became the heart of the community. Dundee was blocked in from development for many years. To the northwest, the D. Hill Nursery, was founded to specialize in fruit trees, and would eventually grow evergreens. Eventually expanding to 900 acres, the nursery made it through the Great Depression by starting a cattle-feed division that would be run through World War II.
As a small town, West Dundee has kept its charm and small-town feeling. Historical sites can be found in downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. Historic buildings include some that gave refuge for slaves and were stops on the Underground Railroad.
