In 1797, Zane gave land as payment to his son-in-law, at the point where Zane's Trace reached the Muskingum River. WIn 1801, the town was officially Zanesville.
The city grew quickly in the 1820s through the 1850's. Novelist Zane Grey, a descendant of the Zane family, was born in the town.
